AFI Top 100: No. 75 In the Heat of the Night

What a fantastic crime movie! What a spectacular message! In the Heat of the Night was a gripping and powerful story. The “who-did-it” mystery kept you on your toes… but nothing could overshadow the tension and anxiety between Detective Tibbs and Chief Gillespie.

Gillespie struggled to overcome not only his racist feelings about Tibbs, but additionally his pride. He rushed to decisions and was furious when proven incorrect… While Tibbs would calculate every decision, he would also let his pride take over.

The famous scene where Tibbs slaps Endicott back broke down barriers and shocked the world. Obviously today is a different world, my first thought was that Endicott should be arrested for assault on an officer, not that it was a black man slapping a white man.

I really enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to anyone.
