AFI Top 100: No. 22 Some Like It Hot

Was this movie made in 1959 or 2013? Not only was Some Like It Hot very funny and clever, but it was also extremely modern. The jokes are still relevant and the premise felt fresh. The tandem of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon was pure perfection and the villans were the type a comedy needs, slightly scary but also a bit over the top.

I could not stop chuckling at Curtis and Lemmon’s exploits in their attempt to poise as women. From their high pitch voices to the fact they actually looked kind of pretty, it was very amusing throughout the film. “Daphne’s” adventure were especially hilarious. Her all-night dancing date with the millionaire mama’s boy (where she of course led) and her pride over her “engagement” brought out several laughs. The only thing I didn’t get was why Jerry agreed to go on that date while Joe took out Sugar Kane, but as they say at the end “Nobody’s perfect.”

Marilyn Monroe did what Marilyn Monroe does. She was gorgeous and charming in her ditzy way. The music is also timeless in this film. I had no idea that’s where “I Want to Be Loved By You” came from.

If you couldn’t tell, I really enjoyed this movie. It was funny and I imagine very groundbreaking in terms of comedies. This is one I would watch again and tell others about.
